Q1: What is the aim of this course?
To work as a SIA Door Supervisor or SIA Security Guard in the UK you will need to have an SIA licence issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). One of the requirements of the SIA licence is that you hold a recognised qualification. Our approved SIA Door Supervisor/Security Guard Course meets the requirement for the SIA Licence. The SIA Door Supervisor course is run over three days and is completed with the examinations to allow you to gain your SIA Licence.
Q2: I want to work as a security guard, is the Door Supervision course right for me?
Yes, you may work as a security guard if you hold a Door Supervisor licence, however you will not be allowed to work as a Door Supervisor if you hold a security guard licence. This makes our Door Supervisor course more valuable.
Q3: How old do I have to be to attend the course?
All SIA courses require the individual to be at least 18; there is no upper age limit.
Q4: My name is spelt wrong on the certificate, what do I do?
If your name is spelt wrong on your certificate, you will have to send us a copy of your passport or driver's licence and we will re-issue you a new certificate, please note it will take over 10 days to receive a new certificate.
Q5: My certificate is lost, what do I do?
A new certificate can be issued for an additional cost of £40.
Q6: I have been in trouble with the police in the past can I still apply for a license?
If the offence is over 5 years old you may still be eligible to apply. Certain offences within the past 5 years may make you ineligible. These are seen by the SIA as relevant offences and include Assaults, Theft, Sexual Offences, Possession of Drugs, and Possession of offensive weapons. If you are not sure if your offence is relevant you can check on the SIA website (www.the-sia.org.uk). On the site there is a criminal record indicator. If you fill in the required fields the indicator will tell you whether you are eligible to apply.
Q7: What awarding bodies do we use?
Our SIA security courses are accredited by and Highfield ABC.
Q8: What is the role of the awarding bodies?
The awarding bodies turn the training specification made by the SIA into training courses and qualifications. The training and qualifications are then delivered using awarding body endorsed training providers. Awarding bodies also accredit prior learning and qualifications and play a key role in the SIA licence application process by checking applicant identity and uploading details to the SIA database used as part of the licence application process.
Q9: Will physical restraint techniques be included in the SIA training course?
The SIA specification requires door supervisors to know how to minimise conflict in aggressive situations. The specification does not require door supervisors to acquire specific knowledge of physical intervention techniques. As a regulatory authority, the SIA requires that door supervisors have the relevant level of competence to operate in a professional manner and increases public trust and confidence in those offering security services. The standards specified do not remove the right of door supervisors to defend themselves when faced with a threatening situation. It also does not remove the duty of the employer to identify and provide additional training for door supervisors should they deem it necessary
Q10: Does SIA licensing remove the need for checks to be made by employers?
The employer is free to do any additional checks or vetting that they consider appropriate (as long as they meet any statutory requirements such as employment law). SIA licensing does not remove an employer's right to use their usual methods of interviewing and application to assess the suitability of the applicant for the post applied for.
Q11: Do I need my certificate to apply for SIA Licence?
No, you do not need your certificate to apply for SIA Licence. You can apply for SIA Licence as soon as you have your result.
